A well-known Florida lobbyist was involved in a collision while traveling on Interstate 595 in Davie in late February. He now faces charges for driving under the influence after refusing to submit to DUI testing.

The arrest report states that he was travelling west when his Lamborghini collided with a Ford Focus that flipped over as a result of the impact. At least two other drivers on the road pulled over to offer assistance and call 911. According to Florida Highway Patrol troopers, the man smelled of alcohol when they interviewed him and that his report of the crash was inconsistent with the account others gave.

According to the lobbyist, the driver of the Ford Focus cut him off to the right; however, investigators claim the auto damage does not reflect his version of events. The report also notes he agreed to take a field sobriety test, but was unable to maintain his balance while attempting to walk a straight line heel to toe when asked by a state trooper at the scene. When the police placed the lobbyist under arrest, he then refused to take a Breathalyzer test. He was subsequently released from custody after posting a $1,500 bond.

A conviction on drunk driving charges can result in serious consequences, including incarceration, a stiff fine and the suspension of driving privileges. It can also have non-legal ramifications for people who are in the public eye, including loss of reputation. Accordingly, people who are in this type of a situation are advised to contact a criminal defense attorney as soon as possible so that a strategy to combat the allegations can be constructed.
